Brandon, a teen in 1990s Pine Lake City, discovers a cryptic note that may lead him to the source of the strange tentacle symbols he’s seen all over town. Instead it leads him to a derelict riverboat where the boat’s missing owner seems to have an obsession with Brandon’s family. Determined to discover the connection between his brother, the owner, and the strange symbols, he begins a scavenger hunt through the city’s abandoned landmarks while being hounded by bullies and a strange cult.
When they tied the noose around his neck and kicked the crate from under his feet, Brandon thought of Jess. Six days had passed since they’d made the midnight voyage to the derelict boat in the black, frigid water.
